Color is normally used to describe the appearance of objects in terms of the individual's perception of them. As a study, color has traditionally been taught in fine art, design and architect schools.
In the past century, the study of color has taken a different turn. The introduction of cameras, cinemas, TVs, color printing, scanners and digital cameras, meant that color could no longer be studied solely in terms of mixing, harmony and composition but it had to be studied in terms of a signal which is captured by an input device, such as a camera, and reproduced on an output device, such as a printer or a monitor.
The Norwegian Color Research Laboratory at Gjøvik University College was founded in spring 2001 with the vision to study color as a light signal, to be captured and reproduced, without isolating it from its traditional context. To achieve this vision the group employs a large number of researchers from a wide background. Having scientists in vision science, graphics, signal processing, physics, image processing, image retrieval and computational color science, as well as an interactive open environment with strong national and international collaborators both in academia and industry, allows us to be one of the best groups in the field. This is reflected in the wide range of theoretical and applied research projects which the group is actively involved in. Further, the group has a large number of well equipped laboratories and conference facilities.
As part of the Department of Computer Science and Media Technology at Gjøvik University College; we work closely with the Media Technology group on problems such as content based image retrieval and video mining. We believe that the combination of interdepartmental collaboration, our excellent staff members, our international links and our laboratory facilities, makes the Norwegian Color Research Laboratory a leading institute for training color experts who are able to meet the increasing industrial demands on high quality color capture and reproduction.
