Visiting Researcher on a Short-Term Scientific Mission for the Color and Space in Cultural Heritage project

Irina Ciortan is a visiting researcher at the Colourlab, where she will be working on a scientific mission for the COSCH project, under the supervision of Jon Hardeberg and Sony George. She will evaluate the quality of spectral imaging systems based on the test data obtained from various laboratories. She will be working as well on the Case Study “Digitization of Romanian Cultural Heritage”, a project in collaboration with GUC, the National Museum of Romanian History in Bucharest and the National Institute for Physics and Nuclear Engineering “Horia Hulubei”.

The First COSI AMB Meeting

The first Academic and Management Board (AMB) meeting of the new European Erasmus+ Joint Master Degree in COlour in Science & Industry (COSI) has been held recently in Saint Etienne, France. Coordinators and representatives from all the four consortium partner universities (University of Jean Monnet, University of Granada, University of Eastern Finland, and Gjøvik University College) and a representative (Prof. Shigeki Nakauchi, Toyohashi University of Technology, Japan) from the associated partners attended the meeting. Jon Yngve Hardeberg and Raju Shrestha from the Colourlab attended the meeting.

Colourlab at ICIP2014

Two papers from the Norwegian Colour and Visual Computing Laboratory were presented at the International Conference on Image Processing (ICIP) 2014 in Paris (France) in October. One paper about analysis of eye fixations data in images and the other on image registration for quality assessment of projection displays. The first was presented by Prof. Jon Yngve Hardeberg and the latter by PhD student Ping Zhao.

CP7.0 researcher Steven Le Moan successfully completes his role as Experienced Research (ER1) in the CP7.0 project at TUD, Darmstadt.This is a milestone in the CP7.0 project, lead by the Colourlab in collaboration with partners around Europe. Steven is now employed at The Norwegian Colour and Visual Computing Laboratory, Gjøvik University College, Gjøvik, Norway as a post doctoral researcher in the HyperCept project.

The sixth training event (TE6) for the CP7.0 project was held at Océ Print Logic Technologies SA, France , on October 23 – 27, 2014. The event was attended by all the research fellows as part of the training program in the CP7.0 project. The event at Océ Print Logic Technologies SA was focused on lectures and discussions from key staff at Océ about, business models and their relation to research, case studies related to 2.5D printing and 3D printing technology, its pros and cons and intellectual property rights related to these technologies.

PhD position HyPerCept - Image Quality in Radiography

The Norwegian Colour and Visual Computing Laboratory invites applications for a PhD position available in the SHP project HyPerCept – Colour and Quality in Higher Dimensions on "image quality in radiography". Topics could include, but is not limited to, subjective image quality assessment, objective image quality assessment, image enhancement, image analysis, and image segmentation. The PhD work is a collaborative work between the Colourlab, the Faculty of Health Care and Nursing at Gjøvik University College, and the Intervention Centre at Oslo University Hospital.

Steven Le Moan joins the Colourlab

Dr. Steven Le Moan has joined the Norwegian Colourlab and Visual Computing Laboratory as a post doctoral researcher. He will work on the HyPerCept project, more precisely on the work package "Gaze and quality based color image compression". We welcome Steven to the Colourlab.

Colour and Visual Computing Symposium 2015 (CVCS 2015)

We are very happy to announce that the Colour and Visual Computing Symposium 2015 (CVCS 2015) will take place in Gjøvik, Norway, on 25-26 August 2015. This will be the eigth time that the Norwegian Colour and Visual Computing Laboratory at Gjøvik University College (GUC) organizes such an event. This edition of the symposium follows up on the success achieved by the previous runs, of the biannual Gjøvik Colour Imaging Symposium (GCIS), from 2003 to 2011, and CVCS 2013. Ludovic Coppel at IARIGAI

Post. doc. Ludovic Gustafsson Coppel recently returned from the Advances in Printing and Media Technology conference (IARIGAI) in Swansea, Wales. Ludovic presented a paper showing the feasibility of spectral proofing (i.e. reproducing the appearance of spot colours in multiple illuminants) with a multi-channel printer and is a collaboration with PhD student Radovan Slavuj and Steven Le Moan (Technische Universität Darmstadt).

The Colourlab was represented at Researchers' Night at Vitensenteret Innlandet on Friday the 26th of September. Prof. Ivar Farup and PhD student Anne Kristin Kvitle demonstrated colour deficiency tests and different visual phenomena. Both kids and parents were able to explore science through fun learning.

Thomas Liensberger from Barbieri electronic, Italy, visited the Colourlab in mid-september. Thomas gave a guestlecture to staff and students at Gjøvik University College on colour measurements.Possible collaboration between Barbieri and the Colourlab was discussed.

A successful pre-defence for CP7 researcher Radovan Slavuj

CP7 researcher Radovan Slavuj had a successful pre-defence on September 18, 2014 at Gjøvik. There, all the work that has been done around printer modeling and halftoning was presented and future directions were suggested and discussed. The Pre-Defense had concept of a real defense with two opponents, supervisors and audience who were free to ask questions.

The HyPerCept annual meeting was held on the 4th of September. An overall status of the HyPerCept project was given by project leader Prof. Hardeberg, status reports on the sub-programs, and 2 minute presentations by the HyPerCept PhD students. On 4th of September 2014 Colourlab Workshop #5 was held at Gjøvik University College. It focused on multispectral image capture, processing and quality. The workshop included speakers as Noël Richard (Université de Poitiers, France), Masayuki Tanaka (Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan) and Jean-Baptiste Thomas (Université de Bourgogne, France).

CIMET Master Thesis Presentations 2014

CIMET Master students from cohort 2012-2014 presented their master theses on 12th and 13th of June, from the four different partner universities via video conference. Five students who are doing their theses at the Colourlab locally and in collaboration with external organizations gave presentations from Gjøvik University College.

Colourlab congratulates all the CIMET students for their successful presentations and all the best for their thesis submission.

Colourlab Workshops #3 and #4/2014

The Colourlab is hosting the third and the fourth Colourlab workshops on the 16th and 17th of June respectively. The 3rd workshop is on the topic of "Quality in Radiography" which includes, presentations on the quality challenges in mammography, the research in radiography in Gjøvik, and radiological evaluation of mammography. The 4th workshop is on more broad topic "Images, spectra, and applications". The workshops will be held at Gjøvik University College. Ivar Farup has published an article "Hyperbolic geometry for colour metrics" in the level-2 Optics Express journal. The article presented how hyperbolic geometry improves the performance of Euclidean colour metrics.
